Some unfair textbook practices include:

• Bundling – The act of including additional products (like a CD that comes with your textbook) so that you are forced to purchase a new textbook with a new CD key.
• New Editions – Publishers update textbooks to new editions when there is absolutely no important reason to do so. For many courses, especially GE classes, the material does not change, and neither should the textbooks. Many publishers simply switch words and numbers on problems and that is not worth the cost of a new book for students.
• Private bookstores – Private university bookstores charge students as close to retail prices as they can. They use their convenient location on campus to rip students off. They rarely give you a competitive price when they you try to sell them your used books. They also hold a monopoly on textbook data making it hard for local bookstores to sell more affordable books and also making it hard for students to compare prices.
